Choosing a dog is something you MUST think about before purchasing or going to a Dog Pound and being overwhelmed by the cuteness of a puppy. There are a lot of matters to consider. Maybe this article I wrote will be helpful.
Now since I am a Miniature Schnauzer lover, a lot of the information that I have written centers around that breed of dog. Take a look and read, it may be helpful in choosing your next puppy or dog.
The document is called, "Choosing a Puppy and then Realizing It Will Become an Adult Dog."
Puppies are so cute, but as they get older most of them will change and some will change into a dog that you really don't care for. Therefore, it is so important to evaluate the different breeds to see if they are compatible for your family, home and life style.

If you look closely at the two Certified Pedigree Certificates you may take notice that Massimo has more light colors throughout his generations than Ciccio Bello.
Yet, in the older pictures, Ciccio Bello appears to be lighter in color. The reason is because as any Schnauzer, whether a Miniature, Standard or Giant gets older, they also get lighter in color (the black Schnauzer usually turns dark brown). By the time that Massimo reaches Ciccio Bello's age of 9 years old as of (4/3/2011); Massimo will probably be more like a silver Miniature Schnauzer. Massimo is now 2 years and 4 months old. If you take notice at the first picture at the top of this web page, both Miniature Schnauzers are almost the same color even with the age difference.
Do you have any of these plants in or around your home? If so, make sure they are in places where your pets can’t reach them, or consider getting rid of them altogether. All Ivy and Lily plants are poisonous to dogs.

The Myth of Dog Years
For years we have been told that for each human year it is equal to seven (7) dog years. Well in my research, mostly because of my Dog Tracker app on my iPhone, I was quite surprised to learn that the 7 year to 1 human year was a myth. It really depends on the breed of the dog, size, weight factors (being overweight, etc.) and health issues, etc., for example, look at just the Schnauzers; you have the Miniature, the Standard and the Giant Schnauzers, all will very in their ages respectively.
For example our Miniature Schnauzers: Ciccio Bello just turned 9 years old on April 3rd; in dog years he is 49.0 years old. Massimo, who was born on December 18th, now 2 years and 3½ months old, but in dog years he is 22.2 years old.
It is amazing how we can be taken in with myths. We should take more time and question some of the different myths that have been passed on to us, and not assume that all myths are true.
