We started in Basel, Switzerland, traveling through the Black Forest along the border between France and Germany, stopping and encountering the multi-cultured city of Strasbourg, France−what an amazing experience learning of the unique details of this beautiful historical city; after boarding our ship it was an hour or more until we left France entering Germany, stopping in Speyer and touring both the Marksburg Castle and the ruins of the Heidelberg Castle, we then entered into the city of Heidelberg where we purchased our Cuckoo Clock.
We then entered into the wine region of Rüdesheim and seeing its sites, as well as enjoying a delicious German meal, along with some fantastic German Riesling wine, while listening to German folk music. Our next stop was Cologne with its awe-inspiring Dom, the Church of the Three Wise Men and many other sites. Plus all the way up the River we enjoyed the breath taking sites of the numerous charming old castles on the mountain tops and along the river banks of the Rhine.
Another exciting experience going up the Rhine River was entering the many locks and watching the gates lock and the water filling the lock and seeing the ship rise to the water level of the river going north. As we entered the country of The Netherlands (“Nederland,”) we enjoyed the beautiful flatland and the amazing windmills, both new and old, until we reached our destination in Amsterdam, where we met our different friends and stayed for a couple of extra days. This was a trip we will never forget. Thanks to Viking River Cruise and its hospitality http://www.vikingrivercruises.com, they made our trip to be
an exquisite luxurious adventure.
